Felting Workshops

If you’d like to try wet felting for yourself, as well as enjoy a fun day out with something wonderful you’ve made to take home at the end, then come and join me in Devon for a felting workshop.  Workshops are suitable for beginners as well as those with existing felting experience who’d like to try out a new technique.

If you would like to book a workshop then please get in touch to either book one of the available dates above, join my waiting list or to discuss a new date and which workshop you would prefer.  Most workshops are a full day (0930-1700/1800), usually take place on weekdays and I can be very flexible in agreeing dates.  Workshops are for 3 people minimum and 4 people maximum and I often run workshops for groups of 4 friends.  So if you have an idea of when and what you would like to make, please do contact me (and please note that all participants on one workshop need to be making the same thing).  Please note that if you reserve a place on a workshop and there are no other participants booked, I hope you’ll understand that I’ll need to cancel the workshop and book you onto another date (which I promise will be much more fun than on your own!).  Please also note that if you are booked onto a particular workshop but would actually prefer to make something else, please contact me to re-book onto the correct workshop (it won’t be possible to change your mind on the day).

Felting workshops take place at my studio in Exmouth, Devon on the south coast.  There’s plenty of off-road parking outside the studio, or it’s just a 7-minute walk from Exmouth railway station (which is around a 25-minute journey from mainline Exeter stations, along the beautiful Exe Estuary).  As many of the workshops are a full and energetic day, if you have a long journey then I recommend that attendees stay overnight before and after the workshop, or at least one of those if possible.  So if you need to book accommodation or fancy making a holiday of it and combine a felting workshop with a trip to Exmouth (my studio is only a 10-minute walk to our 2-mile long sandy beach which marks the start of the Jurassic Coast!), then click on Visit Exmouth for an up-to-date list of all the local accommodation available.

Here are the current wet felting workshops I offer, along with their approximate duration and price, which differs based on duration and the cost of extra materials/components required (all of which are provided for you).  Workshop prices include all tuition and materials, plus snacks and drinks. I just ask attendees to bring along their own lunch. I also ask attendees to let me know in advance if there are any specific dietary requirements, eg gluten or dairy-free, so I can tailor the snacks accordingly!  I usually take payment by UK direct bank transfer, but if you prefer (or are from outside the UK) to make payment by PayPal or credit card please note that there’s a £2.50 fee per person.

Other Considerations to Note Before Booking

Please note that much of the process of wet felting involves standing up at a kitchen worktop-height table to work.  I do have stools so that you can take a break and sit to work if you need to, but you’ll find that it’s easier to work standing up.  Wet felting is quite an energetic activity so please don’t underestimate the physicality of spending a day largely standing up and moving your upper body a lot.  So if you are unsure whether it might be too physical for you, please do look at some of my social media videos of workshops which will give you an idea of some of the physical tasks, and please get in touch with me if you are unsure. Unfortunately also my studio is not wheelchair-accessible. For similar reasons to the above, and as standing height is an important factor, I do not generally offer workshops for children under 16.

There is no toilet in the studio but it is located just a few steps across a patio in the house.  I have very friendly cats who you are therefore likely to meet, so if you are allergic to cats then do please take note of that before booking.

Gift Vouchers

I also offer workshop gift vouchers, which can be purchased for either the full cost of a specific workshop or for any preferred amount which the recipient can use to part-pay for any workshop.  If you’d like to purchase one, just contact me.  To redeem a gift voucher, just pick a workshop from the available list above or get in touch with your thoughts about dates.

Workshops in Detail

  • Felt Bag on a Ball Workshop: 0930-1800, £105

I regularly run felt bag workshops, using a felting ball as a resist shape to make a medium-sized, shaped handbag which can be used as a cross-body or shoulder bag.  Bags are decorated with wool yarns and include a flap closure, to which we add a turn-lock clasp and then attach an adjustable strap to finish off (although if you prefer to make your bag without a flap that’s fine too).

  • Felt Basket/Bowl on a Ball Workshop: 0930-1730, £95

This workshop uses a felting ball as a resist shape to create a large, open, rounded basket with integral side handles or a large bowl without handles, decorated with wool yarns.  Baskets and bowls can be used for storage or are popular as plant pots or purely as a decorative item.  If you prefer, you can also shape your basket slightly differently to turn it into a grab handle basket-style bag.

  • Felt Hat on a Ball Workshop: 0930-1730, £95

This workshop uses a felting ball as a resist shape to create a felt hat, fitted to your own head size, in either a pleated/brimmed or slouchy style.  The hats are embellished with silk fabric, silk/viscose/bamboo fibres and wool yarns.

  • Felt Lampshade Workshop: 0930-1700, £95

This workshop is in two main parts: firstly, we make a long piece of thin decorative flat felt, using your own ideas to create your design, eg a representative landscape or an abstract pattern.  We then use a kit to turn your piece of felt into a beautiful drum lampshade, measuring 18cm high x 20cm in diameter, which can be used as a table lamp or ceiling light/shade.

  • Fringed Cushion Workshop: 0930-1700, £95

This workshop uses lots of decorative wool yarns to create a fringed front edge design on a small cushion, using flat resists to create a folded-style cushion cover requiring no sewing!  We then insert a 25cm square feather-filled cushion pad to complete the cushion, which when finished measures approximately 27cm square.

  • Creative Wallhanging Workshop: 0930-1700, £95

This is another workshop in two main parts: firstly we use wool yarns and other fibres (including silky and sparkly!) to create a piece of decorative felt to your own creative design, which could be a representative piece or completely abstract.  We’ll then frame this in either a large embroidery hoop or a frameless hanging kit, measuring approximately 30-40cm square/round/rectangle (or you could keep the edges unframed or for framing at home under glass if preferred).

  • Small Bag on a Ball Workshop: 0930-1700, £90

This is a smaller version of the original Felt Bag on a Ball workshop, using a smaller felting ball resist shape to create a scaled-down version of the shaped bag to wear as a cross-body bag, large enough to carry your essentials on a night out.  It will also use wool yarns to decorate and have a flap closure, along with a turn-lock clasp closure and thin, long cross-body strap to finish.  If you would like to try out making a bag on a ball but in a less energetic and shorter day, then you might prefer this workshop.

  • Felt Clutch Bag Workshop: 0930-1700, £90

This is another bag workshop using a flat resist to create a rectangle-shaped, flatter cross-body bag with a shaped flap, using wool yarns to decorate our bags and including optional tabs for a handbag strap.  The finished bag measures approximately 24cm x 18cm.  We’ll be finishing off by installing a turn-lock clasp to secure the flap.

  • Fringed Phone Bag Workshop: 0930-1700, £85

This is another small bag workshop, but made using a flat resist to create a smaller rectangle-shaped, flatter cross-body bag, perfect for carrying a mobile phone and other essentials.  We’ll be using decorative wool yarns and curly wool locks to decorate our bags and create a flap with a fringe (although the fringe is optional if you prefer!).  The finished bag measures approximately 13.5cm x 19.5cm.  We’ll be finishing off by sewing on a simple magnetic clasp to secure the flap.

  • Notebook Cover Workshop: 0930-1700, £85

In this workshop we’ll be using a flat resist to create an A5-sized notebook cover, decorated with wool yarns and other fibres in your preferred design.  We’ll also be creating a bead and loop closure for the cover.
