It’s a bit early to be talking about Christmas, I know, but with a festive-themed wet-felting workshop in the diary for October I’ve already been making samples and planning how it will all come together. So I thought I’d share what I’ve been up to.
The idea for a Festive Felt Baubles workshop came about last Christmas, when I gave Karen (who runs creative workshop venue Make at Monteray near Topsham in Devon) one of my small felt bauble hoops (see my last blog), and we realised this could make a really good workshop. I know I’m a bit late to the embroidery hoop party, as they’ve been a popular way of framing textile artwork for quite a few years, but I think they’re really effective at framing these small pieces of sparkly felt. And of course their shape makes them look just like a Christmas bauble!
So we set a date and I made more samples and did some experimenting with different sizes of embroidery hoops, which you can see here. This led to me expanding the sizes for the workshop from my original small tree bauble size up to large wallhanging versions. So I think this will be a really fun workshop, with participants learning a different wet-felting technique as well as getting an early start on Christmas preparations!!
I was also contacted a couple of weeks ago by textile artist Jayne Emerson , who had seen one of my bauble photos and called to tell me what a fab idea she thought they were. We had an interesting chat about where the idea had come from (yep, just out of my head somewhere!) and she was really encouraging about them. It was lovely to get some positive feedback out of the blue like that and our chat has inspired me to think even bigger on the sparkly festive felt front…but I’ll share more on that nearer to Christmas I think!
If you’d like to join me at Make at Monteray (which is a fantastic workshop venue) on 8 October to create your own set of Festive Felt Baubles, here’s the link with all the details.
